Military Families

Our dedicated School Military Liaisons serve as the primary point of contact for military-connected students and families across Papillion La Vista Community Schools. These trained staff members understand the unique needs of military families and can assist with enrollment, academic support, and accessing school resources. Our liaisons work closely with students during transitions, connect families with support services, and help ensure a smooth educational experience. Papillion La Vista Community Schools proudly celebrates Month of the Military Family each November. This month aligns with both Military Family Appreciation Month, designated by the Department of Defense to honor military families' sacrifices, and National Veterans and Military Families Month, a presidential proclamation recognizing both veterans and their loved ones. Throughout November, we host district-wide Veterans Day assemblies featuring special presentations, musical performances, and opportunities for veterans to share their experiences. These meaningful ceremonies help our students understand and appreciate the service of military members and the strength of their families.

In April, Papillion La Vista Community Schools celebrates Month of the Military Child, recognizing the unique challenges and incredible resilience of children in military families. Military children often face frequent moves, parent deployments, and the need to adapt to new schools and communities. These young heroes demonstrate remarkable strength as they navigate changing schools, build new friendships, and support their families during deployments and transitions. Throughout April, our schools participate in "Purple Up! For Military Kids" by wearing purple – the color that symbolizes the combined strength of all military branches. This special month was established by former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger in 1986 to honor the sacrifices of military children and highlight their essential role in the armed forces community.

Supporting Military-Connected Families and Children

WHEREAS, Papillion La Vista Community Schools recognizes the significant contributions and sacrifices made by military service members and their families in service to our nation; and

WHEREAS, military-connected students face unique challenges including frequent relocations, parental deployments, and transitions between schools; and

WHEREAS, approximately 2 million military-connected children and youth are serving alongside their active duty, National Guard, and Reserve parents throughout our nation; and

WHEREAS, the Month of the Military Child in April and Month of the Military Family in November provide opportunities to honor and support military families in our community; and

WHEREAS, the Purple Star designation represents a commitment to providing specialized support and resources for military-connected students and their families;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Education of Papillion La Vista Community Schools:

1. Declares its steadfast support for all military-connected families within our school community;
2. Recognizes April as the Month of the Military Child and November as the Month of the Military Family, committing to appropriate recognition and support activities during these months;
3. Affirms its commitment to pursuing Purple Star designation for all schools within the district to ensure consistent, high-quality support for military families across PLCS;
4. Pledges to maintain and enhance programs, policies, and practices that support the unique needs of military-connected students and their families.
